What Helps in Therapy for Neurodivergent Teens?
Start With the Teen
One thing I have learned is that there is no single trajectory a person is supposed to follow because they are intelligent, gifted, autistic, or have ADHD. Someone can be exceptionally capable in one area and struggle tremendously in another. Sometimes the smartest person in the room is also the person struggling the hardest to make everything work.
Their Terms Matter
Therapy can be one place where you do not have to wear a mask at all. You do not have to perform being easier, quieter, more typical, less intense, more organized, less emotional, or more socially polished than you really are. If you need to be your weirdest self for an hour, that should be allowed too.
What We Might Work On
For parents, this work may mean learning to distinguish between intentional behavior and overload, between unwillingness and inability, and between teaching an important skill and demanding conformity because conformity makes adults more comfortable.
Choosing the Setting
Virtual therapy is available when your teen is in Texas during the session. In-home meetings may be available around Killeen, Copperas Cove, and Temple when they fit the teen and the work. Some teens are more at ease at home; others need privacy that home does not offer. We should talk about that instead of assuming either format will work.

Beyond a Diagnosis
For gifted kids and adults, this work may also mean letting go of the idea that ability created an obligation. Being gifted does not mean you owe the world a particular career, level of achievement, income, degree, or version of adulthood. There is no life you were “supposed” to have because someone once told you that you had a lot of potential.
