How I Work
Narrative Therapy
I Believe Our Stories Matter
A famous time traveler once said, “We’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?”
I believe our stories matter.
They shape how we understand ourselves, our relationships, and what has happened to us. Narrative therapy gives us room to explore those stories, question the ones that no longer fit, and discover parts of your story that may have been overlooked.
I am interested in helping people understand their own story from a different perspective. You are the expert on your own life. I bring questions and curiosity, not a version of events that I have already decided is correct.
What the Story Is Really About
Sometimes I think about Hamilton. You can watch almost the entire musical thinking the whole damn thing is about Alexander Hamilton, and then you get to the last scene and start wondering whether the whole thing was really about Eliza all along.
Life can be like that too. Sometimes we do not know what the story is really about while we are still living the middle of it.
In the Room
We might slow down one sentence you say about yourself and ask where you learned it. We could notice who benefits when a certain version of you stays fixed, and what parts of your experience have not been given room. This is conversation, not an assignment to rewrite your past into a cheerful story.
You may want to speak about a relationship, a loss, or a change in identity. I can help you look for details that the usual account leaves out. If a question misses the mark, we can change it. Your words still lead.
For Different Lives
Narrative work can fit teens, adults, seniors, and families who want to examine how they describe what has happened. With children, I may use language or play that fits their age rather than expect an adult-style conversation. A family can also notice how one shared story affects each member differently.
I combine narrative therapy with person-centered, attachment-based, or family systems approaches when those are useful. The purpose is not to choose a label for every session. It is to make our work fit the person sitting with me and what they hope to discuss.
Where to Begin
Sessions are available virtually anywhere in Texas. In-home work may be an option around Killeen, Copperas Cove, and Temple when it is a good fit. Both settings can make room for a conversation that moves at your pace.
Send a message if a story about yourself has become hard to live inside. I handle scheduling personally. A free 15-minute introductory conversation is available if you want to decide whether my style fits before making an appointment. You do not need to know exactly where the conversation will lead to start it.
